Excerpt:
David couldn’t wait to see the young man again. He called to check on Mathew and got the room number. The prognosis was good, but his heart urged him to check on him in person.

He checked in at the nurse’s station and the matronly woman squished up her nose, “Oh him? He’s been more trouble today… He’s just down the hall two doors on the left.”

“Thank you.” David said and went on his way. He was curious what she meant by trouble but he was more anxious to see Mathew than to stick around and ask questions.

The door was open but he still knocked before entering to respect Mathew’s privacy.

“Come on in.” He heard the young man answer behind the drawn curtains. His voice was low.

“Hi.” David looked in for the first time on his accident victim. He was amazed to see the difference between the earlier victim who appeared nearly lifeless and the man before him in bed. His dark eyes glistened like jewels, filled with intelligence and passion. His long jet black hair that was earlier in a leather thong was now loose and hanging in front of his shoulders nearly to his belly button.

Mathew apprised him curiously. “Hey.”

“You look much better than you did this morning.” David said awkwardly. Mathew still looked beat up but most of the blood was gone. His head wound was wrapped in clean white gauze and he looked alert with bright mocha colored eyes stared intently back at him.

“It’s amazing nothing is broken. I just got finished looking at my x-rays. Doctor thinks I’m made of rubber.” Mathew laughed as if this was one big joke.

“That’s a miracle. Everyone thought you were DOA at first.”

“Dead on arrival?” Mathew looked shocked at the idea he could have been declared dead just a few hours earlier.

“Yeah.” David nodded. “You should have seen the car you came out of.” David shook his head in disbelief that he was talking to the same guy now.

“Do I know you because I don’t remember meeting you? I had a head injury so it might be that…” Mathew cocked his head to the side.

This is a great idea for a story, poorly executed. Ms. Black should developed the characters more; the story moves so fast that it feels jumpy. But the the characters are very interesting and the plot intriguing and topical. I would like to see her rework this story into a novella, following Matthew's struggle to overcome addiction and detailing their romance.

Started out good then seemed to be rushed. Good read.
