Excerpt:
“Christian Brentwood here.”
“I hear congrats is in order,” Tyler's voice rang with indignation.
Christian sat up a little straighter. “I have no idea what you are talking about, Tyler.” The FBI better get the damn trace this time.
“Sure you do. So you’ve knocked her up again. Way to go stud.”
Christian’s body tensing up but he kept his voice calm. “You always had such a way with words.” He needed to keep him on the line, he reminded himself despite his desire to slam the phone down.
“Don’t be snide. I simply wanted to congratulate you.”
“That I doubt very much. How did you find out? We haven’t announced it to anyone yet?” Did he have Allison’s house bugged as well? That meant he knew where she lived. It was too dangerous to keep staying there.
“I have my ways. Check your email.”
Christian clicked on his mail and waited while it opened. The longer he stalled the better to pick up the trace.
“Is it open yet?”
“It’s getting there.” Christian tapped his fingers lightly on his desk.
“A big mogul like you and you don’t have high speed.” Tyler clucked his tongue.
“What am I looking for Tyler?” Christian asked snidely as he glanced at the list of mail he had yet to open.
“It’s the one marked, ‘Till death us do part’.”
Christian scanned through the many lines of e-mails until he came to the one Tyler described. Cautiously, he clicked on the attachment and waited while it opened. Slowly the photo came to life on his screen and his blood froze in his veins.
“Nice isn’t it?” Tyler let out a hardy chuckle. “Death can be so messy.”
Christian stared down at the images of Victoria and Christina, lying on the cement sidewalk, There was blood, pooling around their heads and abdomen, so much blood, and their eyes wide in terror.
“You sick son-of-a-bitch.” If he could reach through the damn phone lines to strangle him, he wouldn’t hesitate a moment to do so.
“Now now, such language.” Tyler laughed mockingly.
“I’ll kill you, Tyler, with my own bare hands, if you come anywhere near my family.” The fire ignited inside Christian, a fire he never let loose, but was now verging on exploding.
“Oh my, I’m shaking in my boots.” Tyler laughed again, low, mockingly low, and harsh.
Christian pushed from his chair, his temper fuelled on high. “I’ll find you, Tyler, and when I do, you will experience a pain one hundred times what you felt when they severed your hand.”
