The Spitfire Lady

"I am the commanding officer of this base. You're new," Old Sniffer declared. "So, what's your name, Ferry Pilot?"

"I am Germaine, sir."

"Well, Germaine sir, make sure you don't try any more stunts like you just performed up there. You're damn lucky to have got that Spit back down here in one piece."

Maine smiled thickly. "That was not luck, sir. It was skill."

"By God, the filly's got an attitude and a head bigger than the cockpit on that Spit!" He wagged his finger at her, as he turned to leave. "No more games in the air, miss, or I'll have you pushing pens around a desk for the rest of the war."

Jack threw Maine a quelling look. She nodded, seemingly understanding that he thought it best she shut up. He felt relieved when the CO walked away. "Don't rile the old bugger," he muttered, aware that Ada's eyes were still firing little visual daggers at him.

"Why shouldn't she rile the CO?" Ada huffed. "You rile me."

"Ada, we have to talk soon."

"Likely we do, Jack Calder."

"But, I have to speak to Maine first." He took note that only Greg, Bea, and Ada were present, and they knew all about the time travelling. "Maine is from the future, Ada. From the same time Greg came from."

Ada threw her hands up. "Well, that's fine then. It's perfectly acceptable to fuck women from the future, and I can tell by the way you're looking at her that you've done just that."

Jack scraped a hand across his face. "Yes, I have. I am really sorry, Ada. We'll talk about everything as soon as I get the chance."

Bea put her hand on Ada's shoulder. "Ada, we've got patients to prepare for surgery. We have to go."

"Yes, we've got more important things to do than stay around here talking to my unfaithful husband. Come on, Bea, we should go."

"I've got things to do too," Greg added, and he turned and left.

Jack grabbed Maine by the waist, lifted her off her feet, and twirled her in the air. "Lady pilot, I love you!"

She laughed as he swung her around. Then, when he set her on her feet, she staggered from dizziness. "Poor Ada. I'm sorry for her. You are a bastard, Jack."

He groaned as he put his arm around her. "I know, but I want to mend my ways. Ada doesn't really want me. She's already involved with Robert Scarrington. Maine, I want to shout to the sky that I love you. I want the angels to hear me. I want God to hear me, because it's the Gospel truth. I swear that I have never loved anyone like I love you. I also vow never to be unfaithful to you."

She kissed him. "Take me somewhere, and show me how much you love me, Jack Calder."

"That I shall do, and after you can tell me how the hell you got here."
