So why was I here when there was not much chance to hook him for myself? I suppose I thought close enough was good enough, and I was trying to maneuver Kev into a three-way. So far, we'd had no luck finding that elusive threesome. The Mexican women looked down their noses at us uncouth antipodeans. And the Indian women were too chaperoned.
Here we were in Merida on Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, at 11 o'clock at night, tramping down 60th Street toward our hotel half an hour walk from the Zocalo. About 30 minutes too far in this heat.
There was a disco nearby, but they wouldn't let us in wearing our shorts. Not respectable enough. I suspect they thought we were going to make trouble. We were much bigger than their bouncer.
All we managed to do was catch a glimpse of local school kids dancing in the street near the Zocalo for the benefit of tourists—traditional Mayan dances with young kids balancing trays of drinks on their heads while tap dancing.
At 11 o'clock it was finished, the streets clearing in near record time. A few forlorn, exhausted vacationers clip-clopped along the near deserted streets in tourist-hire horse and buggies.
As we passed Santa Lucia Park, it was crammed with locals attempting to escape the oppressive heat.
"Hey, look over there," Kev said suddenly, his face brightening.
A woman, flirting with a group of men, was waving.
Kev waved back. "She's cute."
"And she's with a group of guys who are just as likely to slit our throats for our wallets."
"Don't be such a cynic. See, she waved again."
"You go over. I'm hot, I'm tired, and I'm smelly. And besides, she's the only woman over there."
"I thought we might...um...share her."
"That's a joke right?" My heart hammered in my chest at the prospect.
"Hey, we're grown men," he said with a smirk. "We can do what we like. I'm game. You too scared, eh?"
Scared? Hell, here was the opportunity I'd been waiting for, and he’d suggested it himself. There was only one flaw to his scheme that I could see. "Ah, Kev, do you realize...um..."
