Description
Coming Together's Hors d'Ouvres are single story treats taken from the anthologies and sold exclusively at ARe as appetizers. Finger food, if you will, for the libido. Sales proceeds benefit the same charity as the anthology from which they originate.

Yvette Hines' "Shot at Love" comes from Coming Together: At Last (v1) which benefits Amnesty International.

Moni Walker has been a freelance photographer for years. Having spent most of her adult life traveling all over the world and running from commitments of any type, an accident convinces her it's time to stop. She desperately needs financial backing for her studio Pixel Promises, an organization she started to help urban teens. More doors have been closing for her than opening until she gets a call from the vice president of a local shipping company. She never expects to find Dwayne Shelton behind the desk. Dwayne is blunt when he tells Moni he not only wants to offer sponsorship but to also continue their relationship. Moni's usual M.O. has always been to love them and leave them. Now she has to decide if her community program is worth risking both her freedom and her heart. (M/F, interracial, contemporary)

Excerpt:
"Hmm, who's that creamy vanilla dream that just walked in?" Moni Walker inquired as she eyed the tall attractive white man that walked into the room. He had to be at least six-two, with wide broad shoulders she would love to wrap her arms around as she ran her fingers through his short sandy blond hair.

The temperature in the room went from cool to blazing within second as she watched the man move deeper into the room. Her mind emptied of anything else, but him. She couldn't even recall what she and her sister had been discussing before he arrived. Buildings. Clothes. Teens. Food. Pictures. Who in the hell knew. But, she wanted to know him like Abraham knew Sarah.

She became flushed as moisture seeped into her panties from her swelling, throbbing sex. Squeezing her thighs together below her dress, she didn't know if she was attempting to quell the arousal or heighten its feeling. Damn, I'm throbbing.

LaMonica or Nica as she called her twin sister, turned from the buffet table and looked across the room where the man was deep in a conversation with her brother in-law and his partner, Paul.

"That's the other Dee." Meaning that they occasionally called her husband Dee as well. "Dwayne is one of Detrick's friends." Nica snatched up a lumpia off the mound of food piled high on the saucer in her hand and sank her teeth in it. "My husband and his partner Paul have known him since high school."

Moni sipped from her drink, preferring an Amaretto Sour, but settled for the select brand of white wine her sister and her husband had on chill for the party. Detrick Rauglins was a big time lawyer in the Norfolk area and had just won a case against the city to have the few remaining low income housing section, known as the "projects", remodeled on the inside instead of the facelift and proverbial name change the city gave it years ago. Moni had agreed to come to the "party". She was now stuck in the room with her sister and brother's nine to five working friends. Where most of the men were married or in serious relationships that had them practically marching to the altar.

Yup, she was bored out of her damn mind. "Blah, blah, blah." She gazed over at her sister, who was working on her second lumpia. "Is he married?" Moni stared around the room at the wives and wife hopefuls in the house gathered in small clustered between the men and tried to see if anyone was giving a special smile at the cream colored sensation. The only thing she saw was a few women glance in his direction, give him a subtle once over, but immediately resumed their discussion with friends. Probably discussing the latest in front yard flowerbeds.

Being around so many domesticated women made her feel as if a rash was breaking out all over her body. Her sister, the magazine journalist, had been married for eight months now and fell very comfortable in with this crowd. Nope, this happily ever after picnic in the park, neighborhood baseball, Saturday barbeques, networking group was not for her. No way, no how.

Speaking around the food, Nica mumbled, "Oh, no, Moni. He's single, but I don't think he's your type."

Moni glanced at "Dee" again, her pussy throbbed and her nipples tightened as she watched him nodded at a comment her brother in-law made. Any man that could make her clit swell from across the room was definitely her type. "Oh, come on, Nica." She whispered to her sister. "You said he was single. And if he's hanging out with Detrick he must be gainfully employed. How is he not my type?" Lowering her voice further she asked, "Is he gay?"

"Not gay." Cinnamon brown eyes met hers, as if looking into a disapproving mirror, her sister said, "Moni, I can tell by that look in your eyes, that you got one night stand opportunity on your mind." Nica's slender fingers selected a celery stick next.

"Well, what if I do." Moni took a liberal sip from her wine. If this party doesn't get hopping soon, this would not be her only glass of wine. It would take several to get through this dull affair. Who throws a party to sit around to eat and talk?

"I thought you said you stayed in town because you wanted to settle down. Stop being the old Moni who live life for the moment."

The vegetable stick made a crunch under the pressure of Nica's teeth.
Throwing a hand up, she stopped her sister. "I said I was staying in Norfolk to get my business idea off the ground. That kind of settling down." Allowing her gaze to travel the length of "Dee's" sexy body, with his broad chest snug inside a starch light blue button down shirt, tucked into a pair of brown slack that must have been tailor made the way it hugged his hips and thighs. She could almost see the muscles flexing beneath the fabric as he shifted from one foot to the other in his large Allen-Edmond Bradley's. She'd long ago dispelled the myth about men with big feet, having discovered that with a model in Milan, where his height and feet didn't represent what was in his pants. Not at all. However, she was more than willing to give this man a try.

"Beside leopards can't change all of her spots at once." She drank a little more, the honey vanilla taste of the Semillon white wine wasn't giving her a buzz, but the man across the room sure was.

"Moni." Nica's voice held that warning tone, she always hated.
Her twin sister had been an old soul since birth. Nica always knew she wanted to get married and have a family with her "soul mate". Nica had even remained a virgin until she married Mr. "Detrick Rauglins" Right. Moni shook her head, her brother in-law was a hottie with a capitol H, but good thing he'd fallen for the other Walker sister. Since seventeen Moni had enjoyed sex and even though the men she had been with didn't number up to the fingers on both her hands, she wasn't into waiting. If she wanted someone, she slept with him. Plain and simple. Traveling and taking pictures all over the world, she'd received many offers from men of many races and cultures, but she only slept with men who stirred her body.

Mr. Dee was stirring. Big time.

"Don't you Moni me. I will not embarrass you and your hubby. I'm a big girl and I can handle a big boy, just like you're handling that platter of food."
