Chapter One

After four hours
of driving, Stephen decided he needed a break and a cup of coffee. He was
far enough from Sanctuary that he no longer felt the mental ties binding
him to his relatives. For the first time in his life he felt alone. The
feeling was intoxicating and a little scary. No one in Sanctuary believed
in privacy. A few individuals had left the mountaintop compound. Most of
them returned after a couple of years. As he?d told his father, he?d return
too after he did a little exploring.

Stephen parked
in front of a diner on the main street of the small village. The place
looked old, as did the customers inside. Two elderly men stared at Stephen
when he walked in. He smiled and nodded, confident that he was far enough
from Sanctuary. No one would recognize him as a clan member.

A small plaque
over the cash register proclaimed the historic value of the diner. Stephen
raised an eyebrow. The laminate tables had seen better days and the vinyl
chairs were patched with duct tape. When had run-down
become historic? He shrugged. The disrepair of the diner wasn?t his problem?at
least the place smelled good. His stomach growled as the scent of bacon
penetrated his consciousness. Maybe he needed more than just a cup of
coffee.

Stephen looked
around, wondering if he should just grab a spot or wait to be seated. The bell on the door had announced his
arrival. Where was the waitress?

As if in answer
to his unspoken question, a sultry voice called out, ?Just grab a seat
anywhere. I?ll be out in a minute.?

The voice
slithered into Stephen?s chest and another hunger rose. He quickly sat at a
booth to hide his arousal. This was an unexpected response. He?d been told all his life that only clan females were
strong enough to meet his needs. Given that fact, he hadn?t thought a human
could cause his craving to rise. Clearly he?d been wrong. His cock was rock-hard
and throbbing. He counted tables and chairs in an effort to regain control.
Besides, if she worked here, the female couldn?t possibly match her voice.

?Hey boys, here
you go.?

Stephen glanced
toward the back of the diner as the waitress came through the kitchen door
and put two huge plates of food in front of the elderly men. He?d been
wrong. The voice was ugly compared to the woman who now walked toward him. Reddish
blonde hair, artlessly pinned up, trailed tendrils around her bright face.
Her brown eyes danced with an inner light and her smiling lips welcomed him
to her world.

His eyes trailed
a little lower. Her breasts were high and proud, her waist narrow. She had
what seemed to be the longest legs he?d ever seen. With a start he realized
she was just about five feet four but her perfect proportions made her seem
taller. He ached to have riding him, to feel those legs wrapped around his
waist.

?Morning,? she
said. ?I?m Darla. I?m both your waitress and your cook today. I apologize
for the wait but Richard, who should be cooking, called in sick. Would you
like some coffee to start??

Stephen managed
a nod and Darla waltzed off. She was back before he?d regained his
composure and he was thankful for the wide table. Every instinct told him
to grab her and sweep her away to a private place but he knew enough about
the outside world to know such an action would get him arrested. Besides
she wasn?t clan. He could feel the limitations of her human mind but it
didn?t matter because her body called to him.

He wanted this
woman. Stephen's jaw clenched as he tried to clamp down on his feelings. He
didn?t know how to have sex without damaging her but he couldn?t deny the
need that rose in him. Need more intense than he?d ever experienced with a
clanswoman. He couldn?t?he wouldn?t?just ignore the sensation. He smiled up
at Darla and gave her his order.

By the time
Darla came back with his food, Stephen had decided. He couldn?t walk away
from this unexpected development. He knew all the problems and remembered
all the warnings but he had to have this woman at least once. He had to be
careful and he hoped she?d survive the encounter but the danger to her
wouldn?t stop him.
