Major Michael Hyland is a US Marine officer on his way to Vietnam to serve as a trainer in the art of covert warfare, and stops in Hawaii to spend a few days of leisure on the beach. While in his hotel bar on his first evening, he meets and quickly befriends David, who is gay and a highly accomplished seducer of attractive men. Michael and David's great desire to be together permanently becomes a reality when, on his return to the US, Michael's airplane crashes and burns upon landing in Los Angeles and most passengers are burnt to death while he escapes unharmed. He decides quickly to abandon the disaster area, where he is sure that his body would be considered burnt beyond recognition.
