N.J. Walters and Eliza Gayle

N.J. Walters and Eliza Gayle
Interview: Nov 16, 2007
Wildfire would like to welcome authors N.J. Walters and Eliza Gayle. N.J. may be writing in peace and quiet while Eliza is sitting at her keyboard with AC/DC blaring in the background, but both these authors write erotic romance that will rock your world.

N.J. Walters

Angela: What influenced you to get published? How long did it take for your first book to get published?

N.J.: I've been an avid reader of romance novels for years. When I found myself with time off back in 1995, I decided to try and write my own. I'd toyed with the idea for several years, but had never gotten up the courage to try.

I wrote two books, sent them out and received several rejections. I put them away and forgot about writing for another eight years as life got in the way. Then in the fall of 2003, I saw a contest on-line. I dashed off five pages to enter, and obviously I didn't place in the contest. But the story wouldn't leave me alone, so I finished writing it. After I'd rewritten it and polished it, I submitted it to Ellora's Cave. They accepted my story, Annabelle Lee, which was published in October 2004, and I haven't looked back since.

And those two original stories were pulled out and rewritten a few more times. They found a home with Samhain Publishing—Discovering Dani and The Way Home, the first two books in my Jamesville series.

Angela: When a new book comes out, are you nervous about how readers will react to it?

N.J.: I'm always nervous when a new book is released. I think that most authors are. You put so much of yourself into your work and you never know how readers are going to receive it. Books that you think are your best work might get a decent reception, while a story that you thought readers might think was an interesting read may become a reader favorite. There is no way of knowing.

Angela: Do you work with an agent?

N.J.: No, so far I've managed without an agent, but I'll probably be looking for one in the near future.

Angela: There are so many publishers out there, how do you decide who to submit your work to?

N.J.: It's up to every author, or potential author, to know the market well. You wouldn't submit a sweet romance to Ellora's Cave because they publish erotic romance. It would be a waste of time and a lot of disappointment for the author.

So, the key is to know who you are submitting to. Do some research and find out which companies are publishing what you are writing. It will save you a lot of headaches and heartaches if you do. Nothing is guaranteed in this business, but there are things you can do to up your chances of getting published.

Angela: How much time to you spend promoting as opposed to writing? If a reader wants to know what you're up to, do you have an events calendar or website that they can check?

N.J.: That's an interesting question, because the truth is that the more you publish, the more time you need to spend on promotion. I spend more time on it now then I ever have. But, it's part of the job. The actual writing is only a small part of it. There is rewriting, editing, advertising, promotion, etc… If you want to have a successful career, you have to do it all. It's been a steep learning curve for me, but I'm having a lot of fun with it.

Readers can check out my website or my blog. They both contain up-to-date information on what's happening with me.

I also have a yahoo newsletter group. The newsletter releases once a month and contains news, an excerpt, an author interview, contest information, as well as a very popular column written by my husband—Confessions of a Romance Writer's Husband. You can join my newsletter group here.

Angela: When you write, is atmosphere important? For example, do you use mood music or candles? Do you need complete quiet to concentrate?

N.J.: I'm an early-morning writer. After breakfast I turn on the computer and write before my brain gets too cluttered with the chores of daily life, such as answering e-mails, doing promotion, editing, getting groceries, housecleaning, etc… I need quiet to write. I find music too distracting.

Angela: What book do you wish you'd written and why?

N.J.: That's a tough question. I admire books by other authors, but I don't wish I'd written them. Every author has a distinct voice, which is why we love them.

I think that every author would like to write a book that readers would instantly recognize. If you say The Flame and The Flower every romance reader knows that is a Kathleen Woodiwiss book. I think that every author would like to have a book that is so beloved by readers.

I don't think it's something you can actually plan to do. You never know which book will hit that special chord with readers, but it's something to shoot for.

Angela: What books are currently on your nightstand?

N.J.: Right now I have two series books—Holiday Heroes by Rachel Lee and Catherine Mann, and The Beast Within by Lisa Renee Jones—waiting for me to get to them. I just finished reading Sarah McCarty's Spice book, Caine's Reckoning, and am looking forward to the next book in that series. I also have Jesse's Challenge by Nicole Austin (e-book) and I've been haunting the bookstore for the next Nora Roberts book.

Angela: Do you remember the first romance novel that you read?

N.J.: I actually didn't read a romance novel until I was in my mid-twenties. Before then I was reading mostly fiction and historical fiction. I picked up a book at the airport one day—Julie Garwood's Honor's Splendor—and I was hooked.

I started on Amanda Quick then. She had just released her second book. Imagine my surprise when I discovered she wrote under several other names. That was how I discovered series books and became an avid reader of Jayne Ann Krentz, Linda Howard, Iris Johansen, Elizabeth Lowell, Rachel Lee, Sharon Sala… And the list goes on and on and on. LOL

Angela: What's next for you?

N.J.: Where I write a lot of series, I'm constantly trying to get the next one in each done. The next Jamesville book for Samhain—The Seduction of Shamus O'Rourke—will be released on January 1st.

With Ellora's Cave, readers can expect to see the next book in the Awakening Desires series and the Summersville Heat series out next year, along with a novella I wrote for the Birthstone series they will be publishing. I also just submitted the next Tapestries book to my editor and have my fingers crossed that she loves it as much as I do.

Now, I've turned my attention to a book that I've wanted to write for quite a while. It's untitled as yet, but will be a sequel to Shadows Stir, which was published in the Ellora's Cavemen: Dreams of the Oasis IV anthology. I created a warrior group known as Shadow Ryders with the story of Gideon and Jo Harris. Now it's Jo's sister's turn to have her story told. I hinted at it in Shadows Stir and I've finally found the time to start writing it.

Once upon a time N.J. Walters had the idea that she would like to quit her job at the bookstore, sell everything she owned, leave her hometown, and write romance novels in a place where no one knew her. And she did. Two years later, she went back to the bookstore and her hometown and settled in for another seven years.

One day she gave notice at her job on a Friday morning. On Sunday afternoon, she received a tentative acceptance for her first erotic romance novel, Annabelle Lee, and life would never be the same.

Eliza Gayle

Angela: When a new book comes out, are you nervous about how readers will react to it?

Eliza : Always. How can I not be? Even though I like to think I've written the best story that I can, I still want everyone else to love it as much as I do.

Angela: What is your writing process? Do you outline, fly by the seat of your pants, or a combination of both?

Eliza: I do a little bit of both. I come up with characters and a premise and then just sit down and write. Before long I start to run out of steam on the story and have to step back and do a little brainstorming. I don't generally plot more than a couple of chapters at a time though because invariably it changes when I least expect it.

Angela: When you write, is atmosphere important? For example, do you use mood music or candles? Do you need complete quiet to concentrate?

Eliza: Atmosphere really depends on the book and the characters. Sometimes I prefer complete quiet. But for my new novella Dirty Deeds, the character is a total AC/DC freak so I listened to AC/DC music non stop throughout the writing of it.

Angela: What's next for you?

Eliza: I have a new four book series coming out next year with Phaze. Pentacles of Magick. I really fell in love with the four brothers in this series. Who can resist two sets of twins, right? Also in 08 is my contribution to the new Vampire Oracle series at Cobblestone, Awaken. My heroine is a singer and a good friend of mine wrote me a song for inspiration especially for the character. It fit perfectly.

Angela: Do you ever experience writer's block? If you do, how do you cope with it?

Eliza: Yes, unfortunately I get writer's cramp a lot. I whine to my friends, I catch up on the DVR, I read a little, eat some chocolate, and then finally make myself sit down with a writing buddy and do timed writing. It works every time.

Angela: Describe the space where you write.

Eliza: I'm lucky in that I have a nice little office above the garage. My husband built a desk and shelves for me so I have plenty of space. I have a small water fountain next to my desk for the soothing sound, not to mention the feng shui effects. For extra inspiration I have a fabulous glossy photo of James Marsters hanging right in front of my desk. And because I'm a bit of a faery fan, I have a collection of statuettes and posters of faeries and dragons all around.

Angela: Out of all of the characters that you've written, who is your favorite and why?

Eliza: Kian, my shape shifting blue dragon who is in both Taken By Tarot and Dragon's Fate. Why? Because he's a hotter than hot blue dragon. LOL Wouldn't you like to have one?

Angela: What books are currently on your nightstand?

Eliza: I actually have a small stack on the nightstand. LOL I'm currently reading the Atlantis series by Alyssa Day and Lover Unbound by J.R. Ward. I also have my PDA loaded with ebooks and am currently reading A Slave's Way Out by C.A. Salo and Sacred Secrets by Roxy Harte.

Angela: Dealing with writing deadlines can be a challenge. What do you do to cope with the stress?

Eliza: I'm one of "those" people that actually work better under pressure. I might complain the whole time but I tend to get a lot more work done than I do without the deadlines.

Angela: Do you remember the first romance novel that you read?

Eliza: Sweet Savage Love by Rosemary Rogers. I was a very young teenager hiding in the corner of the library devouring this book. I was shocked and absorbed at the same time. All through those teen years I read just about every historical romance book I could get my hands on in our little library. I've been hooked on romance novels ever since.

After penning several sequels to her favorite movies in her youth, with a more romantic slant of course, Eliza temporarily put away her dream of writing for service in the Marine Corps. After the service she was waylaid with college, marriage, the corporate world and having babies.

From the moment she read her first erotic romance novel two years ago, she knew she had found her niche and realized that her dream was passing her by. So after years of thinking about writing she finally grabbed her laptop and wrote. Eliza lives in beautiful North Carolina and spends her days dividing her time between writing erotic romance, her book video business, and raising her two daughters with her husband of fifteen years.

She likes her stories hot and spicy whether they be contemporary, fantasy, or paranormal and will write in whatever genre her imagination has conjured that day.

A Safe Heart by Brenna Lyons
This story is rated 4 flames. It contains explicit love scenes described using graphic and direct language. Read at your own discretion.

Author Note:

In The Color Of Love, I briefly touched on the stormy and explosive manner in which Grace and Michael came together. There never seemed a decent way to add a scene about it to the novelette, because it was backstory, so when ARe gave me this change to give a peek behind the scenes, I grabbed on with both hands. My thanks to ARe, and happy reading to all.

Brenna

~

Grace Mallory stared at the half-empty glass of white wine...her second thus far, running her finger along the upper edge of the crystal.

"Something wrong, Grace?" Josh asked.

Besides the fact that I'd rather be drinking a beer? Of course, Joshua Winters would probably be shocked, if she ordered barley and hops with a seventy-dollar meal. For him, it was the finest vintages, yet another difference between Josh and Michael.

She shook that thought away, masking it as a negative response, pasted on a smile and raised her glass to her dinner companion. Forget the past. Josh is the present. There's no reason to compare them. Michael is gone.

"It's Justice again, isn't it?" he asked, setting his glass down and picking up his fork. His grip was light, nearly pretty in its elegance.

Grace wanted to deny it, but there was little point. Josh had waited three months to approach her about furthering the relationship between them. Though he didn't want to be a rebound, he knew she was hurting and would for a little longer.

Unlike Michael, Josh had a heart and could appreciate such things. Josh wasn't clumsy. He wasn't without perception and empathy.

"It still stings. I guess it will, for a while," she offered.

"You don't just turn off your feelings," he agreed, twisting his fork in the perfect primavera.

The perfect primavera. The perfect man. So, why doesn't it feel like it sometimes? Why do I still think of Michael? It was insane. No rational person would be thinking about Michael Justice, after what he did. At least she could honestly say she didn't want him.

"If you don't mind me asking..." Josh glanced up at her, assessing her mood.

"No. Go on."

"How did you ever fall in with Justice? I would never have pegged the two of you as compatible."

"I suppose we weren't," Grace conceded. Which made her feelings all the more incomprehensible.

"How did it happen?" He went back to his meal, giving Grace space to choose to answer...or not.

Space... Did Michael ever give me space?

~

"Really? This is no joke?" Michael asked.

Grace nodded. "I told you that Adam Silver is a fan."

Convincing the art critic to detour to cover Michael's show hadn't been difficult. Not that Grace was going to tell Michael how easy it had been. If he thought she'd had to do some major wheeling and dealing to pull this off, let him think it.

"Grace...I...you really—"

She smiled at his stumbling. For once, she'd left Michael Justice speechless. Grace had never met a more self-assured man. He was gorgeous, buff, talented, intelligent, and good-natured. What was there not to be self-assured about?

His hands cupped her head, and his mouth closed on hers. Grace's surprise was drowned out by an uncompromising arousal.

She'd wanted Michael Justice since the first time he'd set foot in Le Artiste; this response was too good to be true. Grace pressed her hands flat to his chest and opened her lips wider, moaning as he deepened the kiss.

The faux ivory pins holding her hair up eased out then clattered onto the edge of her desk. Her hair loosened then unfurled, the weight sliding along her shoulders and back. Michael buried his hands in its length, fisting then releasing it, exhaling hard against her cheek.

Grace slipped her arms up, circling his neck and bringing herself flush to his body...and to the erection straining his jeans. Anne had already left for the day, and she'd never been more glad of the fact.

Any speculations about his intentions were laid to rest. The man had the most unquestionably carnal nature she'd ever encountered, and Grace loved it. In a heartbeat, she knew Michael wouldn't be stopping, and she didn't want him to.

As if stating his agreement, he yanked up at her skirt, uncovering her to her hips. The fingertips of his left hand traced the tops of her thigh-high stockings then retreated.

His lips left hers, and their eyes met. The question was asked and answered that simply, intent and agreement.

With a nod of his head, Michael lifted Grace to her desktop and leaned over her, pushing papers and pens aside as she sank beneath him. His jeans were open and pushed away before she had her bearings again. Her panties were at her knees a heartbeat later.

He lodged himself inside her with a moan and a shiver. Grace levered her legs up, kicking away her heels and panties, intent on wrapping them around him. Michael had other ideas; he grasped her beneath the knees and forced her legs up and apart.

Before she could question him, he was pistoning in and out of her. Not that Grace intended to complain about it. Not while she was skyrocketing to climax.

Her brain ceased to function, awash in waves of sensual stimuli. Gasping cries that might have contained fractured pleas for more gave way to a full-throated scream of release that scorched at her lungs and throat.

Michael grumbled and grunted out something that made no sense to her. He froze inside her then raised Grace until she was chest to chest with him again, teetering on the edge of her desk, the plane of his hips and the length of his cock holding her in place.

Grace thumbed several buttons on his denim shirt open and parted it to reveal his chest. He seemed to hold his breath, while she lowered her face, pressing her lips to his skin. The taste of his salt-heavy sweat and musk had barely registered on her savoring tongue when he was moving again.

She reached her toes out, grasping the arms of her desk chair and reeling it in, thanking some unnamed deity that she'd opted for a chair that didn't roll at the heavy executive desk and one that did at her smaller work station.

The fact that it didn't roll meant she could plant her feet on it and move against Michael, setting a furious pace to off-the-charts pleasure. Michael's climax was as frantic as the rest, hot jets of come buffeting her while he continued to thrust into her.

Then, they were still in each other's arms, breathing harshly, rumpled, sweat-soaked and, at least for Grace, still not sated. Michael's breath teased at her swollen lips, his words easing inside, following the paths his tongue once had.

"Dear God, I've been dreaming about that for weeks."

She nodded. Grace had been dreaming of it too, but she'd never dared hope Michael would... Rock my world? Oh, but he had done that.

And, she wanted it again. Grace went back to unbuttoning his shirt, trailing her lips over ridges of muscles drawn tight in arousal.

Michael went to work on her blouse, playing at her breasts through her bra, still deliciously hard inside her. "Satin," he noted. "Nice."

Grace pushed his sleeves down his arms, and he released her with a grumbled complaint, tearing the clothing off and returning to his exploration. In a few dizzying moments, she was stripped to the waist.

"Better," he breathed. His hands cupped her breasts, his thumbs brushing over her nipples, sending ripples of delight through her belly.

"Yes. It is." Her voice hardly seemed her own, low, husky, pure invitation. She'd never played the wanton before. There was something liberating in just letting passion unfold, expand...explode.

His cock jerked, and she closed her eyes, arching against him.

Let it happen. Whatever he's planning, just go with it. Worry about where it takes you later.

Michael slid from her body, and she opened her eyes, shaking her head and moaning in protest. Her counsel of following where Michael led didn't extend to following him to an early end, apparently.

Grace wrapped her legs around him, and he smiled widely, moving closer as she tightened her thigh muscles and drew him in. There was something knowing in that smile, something wicked and taunting that made her blood heat again.

He unwrapped her legs and spread them wide, licking his lips as he surveyed the length of her body. His cock brushed the sensitized slit still aching for him.

"Before this goes in again, we're both going to be naked," he informed her.

Grace swallowed hard, meeting his dark blue eyes. She flicked a glance at his erection, and it bucked in response.

Let it happen. For once, don't think. "Then we better get moving on that."

His voice was so low, she almost missed his response.

"I don't know what I did right, but I swear to God, I'll do it again."

A smiled pulled up at her lips. "I certainly hope so," she purred.

Grace unhooked then unzipped her skirt, swiveling her hips as she pushed it away to let it fall to the floor. Michael released her legs and watched it drop.

His hands returned, working their way beneath her stockings and peeling them off, kneading her legs as they eased away. They landed somewhere behind him, but neither of them paid them any attention.

Green eyes were locked with blue, something nameless growing between them.

~

"Grace?" Josh inquired, a note of concern in his voice. The backs of his fingertips trailed along the line of her jaw.

She started then smiled. "It just happened, Josh. Sometimes, life hits you, when you don't expect it."

His smile wasn't brittle and hard. It was soft, nurturing. He tucked an escaping lock of hair back into her bun. "We don't have to discuss it, if you don't want to."

That brought out a more natural smile in her. "I'd appreciate that."

"You know I'd never force you to talk about something you don't want to," he reminded her, a touch of hurt in his tone.

"Of course." They'd been friends before they were lovers. They'd been friends before Michael...and after Michael and were now. They likely always would be.

Josh leaned toward her, feathering his lips over hers, parting them carefully. The kiss was slow and deep, a promise of the night to come. When he pulled back, his eyes glittered in renewal of that same promise.

He went back to his meal, and Grace noted that he was nearly done, when she'd barely picked at her own.

"I take it you aren't hungry tonight, Grace?" he asked, probably believing it a safe subject.

Her stomach clenched uncomfortably. "Unfortunately, no."

"Dessert to go?" he offered.

"If you'd like some. I'll pass, thanks."

Josh cocked his head, examining her for a moment, as if she presented a logic problem to him. "Shall we retire to my place?"

A little thrill went through her at the thought of Josh's undivided attention to her. Where sex was concerned, 'undivided' was one word that surely applied to him.

"That's the best idea I've heard all day," she admitted.

"I'm glad."

He waved for the check and signed to have it added to his club tab. In minutes, he was whisking her away to bliss.

Bliss wouldn't come in moments, of course. Josh was the type to wait until they were comfortably ensconced in a bed, clothing hung or folded nearby, condom in place...safe and comfortable, in every way.

Quickies weren't in his repertoire, either. When Josh committed to sex, he planned to take his time and do it right, which meant his full focus and determination on the goal of them both enjoying the night fully.

As they waited for the car, Josh indulged in another preparatory kiss. It did its job well, rendering her slick and aching for more, wiping the bittersweet memories of fast fucks and careless words from her mind.

She slid into the car next to him, letting her eyes wander his impeccably-kept appearance. Josh was her friend and her lover. Best of all, Josh was safe.

If there was one thing Michael Justice taught her, it was that nothing was more important than a safe heart. If she didn't wake from dreams of him, all the better. It meant she wasn't disturbed.

She's been termed "one of the most deviant erotic minds in the publishing world...not for the weak." (Rachelle for Fallen Angels reviews) Milieu-heavy dark work is practically Brenna's calling card, with or without the romantic or erotic content.

With degrees in accounting and computer programming, backgrounds in everything from teaching to clerking, tracking fraud suspects to working for the Air Force and the Navy as a civilian, it's a strange irony that Brenna Lyons will become best known for her first love...writing. Brenna is an active member of TELL, EWAG, BroadUniverse, EPIC, WRW, and ERWA.
